Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. is a multinational automaker headquartered in Japan. It formerly marketed vehicles under the "Datsun" brand name and is one of the largest car manufacturers. In 1999, Nissan entered an alliance with Renault S.A. of France, which owns 44.4% of Nissan as of 2008. Nissan is among the top three Asian (also known as the Japanese Big 3 Automakers) rivals of the "Big Three" in the U.S. Nissan is also noted for being one of the world's leading manufacturers of automobile engines, with its VG and VQ V6 engines appearing on "Ward's 10 Best Engines" for 11 straight years - every year since the award's inception.

In 1928, Yoshisuke Aikawa founded the holding company Nippon Sangyo (Nippon = Japan and Sangyo = Industries). "The name 'Nissan' originated during the 1930s as an abbreviation" used on the Tokyo stock market for Nippon Sangyo. Nissan started to manufacture automobiles in 1933.

The logo includes a circle which symbolizes the rising sun and the sincerity and the rectangle – the sky.
