Renault S.A. is a French automaker producing cars, vans, buses, tractors, and trucks. Louis Renault made his first car - a De Dion-engined vehicle of 273 cc - in 1898, in the backyard of his parents' house. Having received orders from potential customers, he founded Renault Freres with his two brothers Fernand and Marcel.

The first Renault car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV was sold to a friend of Louis' father after giving him a test ride on 24 December 1898. The client was so impressed with the way the tiny car ran and how it climbed the streets that he bought it. The brothers immediately recognized the publicity that could be obtained for their vehicles by participation in motor racing. His company remained very involved, winning the first ever Grand Prix motor racing event in a Renault AK 90CV in 1906. In the late seventies and early eighties Renault setted up a dedicated motorsport division called Renault Sport, and won the Le Mans 24 Hours while achieving success in both rallying and Formula One. Renault also took over the Benetton F1 team in 2001, and quickly became very competitive. In 2005 and 2006 the team won both Constructors' and Drivers' titles.

The Renault logo has changed nine times since 1898 when the company began. The last change was in 1992, when the diamond was modernized. The Renault diamond started out as a bonnet emblem. The horn lived behind it, and from 1922 the centre of the badge was cut out to allow the sound to escape. It started out circular and became a diamond shape in 1924.
